Glad you enjoyed it too....let's hope she hurries up writing the next one!Claire Bottomley Book Club Mumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00094955308786652840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6059964551024999840.post-78566794255009424462012-01-30T08:41:05.814-08:002012-01-30T08:41:05.814-08:00I thought 'when god was a rabbit' was a br...I thought 'when god was a rabbit' was a brilliantly written debut. I had not read any reviews previous to reading so was completely oblivious to the route the book would take which I really enjoyed discovering as I read through. I thought Elly's voice was very strong and I conjured up her beautifully in my mind. I thought the way the author developed her from a child into an adult was seamless although I missed the heartbreakingly innocent childhood comments which require the reader to fill in the often dark and disturbing meaning.
One character I struggled to engage with and found less convincing was her brother I didn't quite 'get' him, and now I think about it I think the male characters are all less 'convincing' in general.
There are so many themes in this book but the most obvious one is that of love and loyalty between family and friends. In this book water is almost as thick as blood. Elly and her father both display huge amounts of loyalty to their friends the mysterious Jenny penny, Ginger Arthur and Alan.
This book is a fantastic read, not too demanding but not superficial either. I would definitely recommend it and read her next book! AnnaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
